A departure from his travel-inspired paintings which boldly capture memory, experience, and the play of light on landscapes and architecture, John Lennard’s
The Witness, (2016) depicts shadowy figures on a quiet and wintry Toronto street. Suspended in time amidst an indigo sky, this scene, painted from an unseen witness’ viewpoint, suggests that a dark narrative is unfolding while the city sleeps. Lennard’s works are often a direct response to his surroundings and reveal an intense observation of time and place with a sensitive observation of the human condition.

Lennard is an accomplished artist and musician who discovered his deep love of art while touring the capitols of Europe throughout the 1980s in a variety of punk rock bands. On his return, Lennard began his artistic practice studying at the Ontario College of Art and Design, at the Arts Students League in New York and the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy. His work is represented in many private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States and Europe.
